Brie’s First Flight!

Earlier this month we took our first plane trip with Brie! We were a bit hesitant as she was just a little over 6 months and we weren’t sure how well she would be on a plane. Dogs of a certain size are allowed to travel in the cabin area with the passengers but they count as a carry on item (with additional pet fees, please check with your travel Airline). We had to buy a special travel carrier for her; we tried quite a few and finally settled for the one you see in the picture below. Please see links below for some additional dog travel carrier options.

This travel carrier was purchased from Walmart. Brie has a long torso so we were trying to find a carrier that was the maximum allowable size permitted by the airlines. After trying a few different ones we settled for this one as she was the most comfortable in it. The carrier has a little padding on the floor and mesh all around. It has a shoulder strap and handle option.

Overall, she did very well on her first flight travel. The flight time was approximately 3 hours long. Including security, immigration and wait times, total travel time was about 7 hours door to door.

One of the most exciting parts of our trip was the meeting of Brie and Milo. Milo is my sister’s 3 year old Maltese Chihuahua. Milo is a bit reserved and can take a bit longer to warm up to other dogs. Brie on the other hand is a social butterfly; she loves meeting new people and dogs. The first meeting was a bit worrisome as Milo growled oh so slightly, but they did warm up to each other. The entire time we were in Edmonton Brie and Milo had a frenemies relationship. They would be playing around and sharing toys with each other and in the next moment they would be trying to claw at each other. By the end of it we think they both were more friendly than when they first met.

After our return from the trip, we noticed Brie was a bit sad for a few days as she didn’t have a companion to play with. I spoke to my sister and she mentioned the same thing about Milo. We always underestimate the power of companionship and togetherness until it’s gone, whether it be of a human companion or animal. Let’s all appreciate those who are around us and take the time to show that we love and care for them.
